All About Body Mass Index (BMI)
Whether
you want to lose weight, gain weight, stay healthy,
develop bulky muscles, or are concerned if you're
obese, it is important that you understand what body mass
index is.
Body Mass Index or BMI, is the
most commonly used formula to determine the level of obesity.
Under the International System of Units (SI), BMI is calculated
by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by the square of the
person’s height in kilograms. In the United States, the BMI is
calculated by multiplying a person’s weight times 703 and then
dividing this result by the square of the person’s height in
pounds. The result of these calculations will then determine if
you’re overweight, underweight, or have ideal
weight.
Usually BMI value settings are as
follows:
A BMI number over 30 may be the
signs of person with obesity.
A BMI value over 25 will suggest
a person is overweight.
A BMI level between 18.5 to 25
may indicate an optimal or ideal
weight.
A BMI level of under 18.5
indicates the person might be
underweight.
A BMI measurement under 17.5
could mean the person is anorexia.
